Please verify Java installation
There are several reasons why java applets may be unable to connect to the internet:

If you are using Internet Explorer
Tools >> Internet Options >> Advanced
Check Java (Sun) >> Use JRE *** <applet> is ticked.

If you are using Mozilla Firefox
Tools >> Options >> Content
Check Enable Java is ticked.

Other possible issues
A security exception - If your security is set to high instead of normal, this may be prohibiting your connection.
Your Firewall or Router - Some firewalls or routers can block applet connections, try temporarily disabling your firewall, or grant access to java applets.
Your ISP - Some Internet Service Providers restrict applet connection attempts. Contact your ISP to resolve these issues.
