Consulting with the community
Telecommunications systems are vital to our business and social lives but we recognise that it is essential that the masts that make our phones work are designed and sited to keep visual impact to a minimum.
This website looks to build on Vodafone’s best practice consultation methods, and whilst we are aware that not everyone has access to a computer, it will make these proposals available to a wider audience. Please note that conventional consultation activities will not be curtailed and information will sent by post on request.
Consultation Timeline:
February 2008
Consultation begins with the local community, including Ward Councillors and residents. In addition a press notice is put into the Sheffield Star and a pre-application consultation site notice is erected.
January 2008
With a new design finalised, pre-application consultation with Sheffield City Council begins for the revised proposal. This approach is in line with the ’10 Commitments’ and Code of Best practice on Mobile Phone Network Development.
At the time of the application the design and the technology was the most minimal available to meet the technical requirements of Vodafone in meeting its customers needs.
Due to advances in technology a reduction in the amount of equipment from 6 antennas to 3, which are also OF A smaller size can be used to satisfy the requirements of both the 2G and 3G networks.
Due to the use of this new equipment the antennas could also fit into the chimney flues and therefore the whole proposed structure has been reduced in height, width and depth; previously the chimneystacks did not contain antennas and were included in the design to allow the proposal to be of a similar design to the surrounding architecture.

October 2007
With continued consultation with Sheffield Planning Department and the comments of the local community taken into account, we continued to assess the design and technologies available to us for this development. With a potential reduction in the number of antennas required the application was withdrawn to allow a full reassessment to be undertaken.
August 2007
A planning application for determination is submitted to Sheffield City Council.
July 2007
An informal drop in session is held to give local residents and interested parties the opportunity to discuss and review the proposed telecommunications development before a planning application is submitted to Sheffield City Council.
June 2007
On behalf of Vodafone Ltd. Patrick Farfan Associates Ltd hope to submit a planning application for determination by Sheffield City Council.
May 2007
After redesigning the proposal in line with the suggestions made by Sheffield’s planning department, Patrick Farfan Associates Ltd start wider consultation. Pre-application consultation correspondence, including details of this website, is sent to the Planning department, the Nether Edge Ward Councillors and Local Residents. In addition to this a press notice is placed in the Sheffield Star stating the intention, on behalf of Vodafone, to submit a planning application for the proposal, as outlined in this website and through the virtual reality model (VR-model).
January 2007
The planning department respond to pre-application consultation, suggesting the use of chimney flues instead of the revised design of two solid chimneystacks.
November 2006
Sheffield City Council is again formally written to, outlining the revised designs with new plans and photomontages, showing a development based on the comments and recommendations of the planning department.
August 2006
After further consultation with Sheffield City Council’s Planning Department, Patrick Farfan Associates revise the design taking into account the comments made by the planning department with regards to the initial designs.
Changes are made to the proposal resulting in the design of six antennas in two new chimneystacks of smaller scale compared to the original design of six antennas in one larger chimney.
July 2006
Patrick Farfan Associates Ltd formally writes to Sheffield City Council outlining the discounted options and proposed design for the Henry Hall, which consisted of adding a chimney to contain 6 antennas.
July 2006
A site visit is conducted with a representative of Sheffield City Council’s Planning Department to outline Vodafone’s requirements and proposed designs for Henry Hall.
